HISTORY
Georgia Association of Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows

History
Ideas are conceived in the mind of someone; some ideas die because they are too weak to withstand criticism of skeptics. On June 27, 1963, in the Abby Rockefeller Reading Room at the Spelman College campus, in Atlanta, Georgia, the idea of a state organization of ministers' wives and ministers' widows became a reality. Mrs. Queen E. Cook (DREAMER) had been attending the National Association of Ministers' Wives and Widows meeting since 1954, but could not get the ministers' wives of Georgia organized. Mrs. Nancy Pollock, President of the Atlanta Baptist Ministers' Wives and Widows Coterie, took a group of her ladies to Raleigh, North Carolina, to extend the personal invitation to the National President, Mrs. Rendella W. Lucas, to come to Georgia and organize the Georgia Association of Ministers' Wives and Widows. An election was held and the Georgia Officers were elected:
Mrs. Nancy Pollock, President
Mrs. Queen E. Cook, 1st Vice President
Mrs. Fannie Lomax, 2nd Vice President
Mrs. Ruth Stripling, 3rd Vice President
Mrs. A. G. Davis, Secretary
Mrs. Jessie Stell, Financial Secretary
Mrs. Jewell Terrill, Corresponding Secretary
Mrs. H. C. Carswell, Treasurer
Mrs. Mary Lockett, Chaplain
Mrs. Annie Ruth Smith, Reporter
President Nancy Pollock made the following appointments:
Mrs. Julia Borders, Coordinator
Mrs. Clara West, Chairperson of Programs
Mrs. LaVada McKinney, Musician
Mrs. Ruth Stripling, Musician
Mrs. Mella Brown, Dean
This organization has been affiliated with the National/International Association of Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows since being organized in 1963. Our first convention was held in April, 1964 in Savannah, Georgia. Three denominations, 4 chapters, and 45 members registered.
